Pipistrel Virus

The Pipistrel Virus is a series of civil utility airplanes manufactured by Pipistrel Aircraft.

Summary

In 1995, Slovenia-based Pipistrel introduced the first of their Sinus and Virus lines of light-sport-aircraft. In 2007 the smaller Virus (pronounced "Vee-Roos"), won the prestigious NASA Personal Air Vehicle Challenge, followed by the 2008 General Aviation Technology Challenge, and the 2011 Green Flight Challenge.

As Virus' reputation spread, in 2015 the Indian Ministry of Defense chose it for as official trainer for their Air Force, Navy and National Cadet Corps. Then 2016 saw the arrival of the SW121, happy beneficiary of Pipistrel's 20-plus years of experience designing energy-efficient motor-planes with a glider philosophy.

In a class where aerodynamic excellence is paramount, the 121 soars – thanks to its low-drag carbon-fiber teardrop-shaped body, a high-aspect wing that maximizes laminar flow, and a variable-pitch feathering propeller that lowers resistance while delivering exceptional performance, even when paired with the Virus' relatively small Rotax 912 S3 engine.

With a dual-screen glass cockpit, full-featured auto pilot, ballistic parachute rescue system, and airbrakes for precision descent, this motor-glider is loaded with state-of-the-art features – making the Virus SW121 more than just an award-winning trainer, but the epitome of high-speed, high-tech, long-range and environmentally-friendly fun.
