The Airbus Beluga, technically the Airbus A300-600ST (Super Transporter), is an outsize cargo freight airplane manufactured by Airbus. The aircraft is based on the Airbus A300-600 featuring a highly-modified fuselage notable for its unique appearance and a greatly-expanded front section resembling a beluga whale. It is also one of the few modern commercial aircraft to feature a tailplane with auxiliary fins.
The Beluga was designed to replace the Aero Spacelines Super Guppy which Airbus had been using to ship narrow-body fuselage sections and other aircraft parts for manufacture of Airbus aircraft. While not significantly larger than the Suppy Guppy, the Beluga was purpose-built as an outside cargo transport from the onset with a lowered flight deck which prevented the need to disconnect cables/service lines when opening the front cargo door, thereby decreasing loading/unloading time by approximately half.
Only 5 units were ever built though as a fleet they have seen significantly more flight time than originally anticipated. By 2013, the Beluga was unable to move aircraft parts, especially those of the Airbus A350, sufficiently fast enough to satisfy manufacturing demand. Airbus began developing the Airbus Beluga XL based on the Airbus A330 with the intent to phase out Belugas individually as the Beluga XLs enter service.
