The Volocopter VoloCity is a prototype autonomous eVTOL aircraft in development by Volocopter GmbH.

Summary

The VoloCity is an electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) multicopter, a revolutionary aircraft designed for inner-city passenger transport. This unique aircraft is the fifth generation multicopter aircraft by Volocopter GmbH of Bruchsal, Germany. It is the very first aircraft of its kind and has completed over 1,000 test flights to date.

The digital cockpit boasts a state-of-the-art flight and assistance systems with more than 100 microprocessors to ensure intuitive control of the aircraft. It seats two passengers' side-by-side, and a secure compartment for hand luggage. There are 18 rotors that will enable a smooth vertical takeoff and landing, a maximum flight altitude of 2,000 m above sea level, and a maximum range of 35 km (19 nmi) or a flight duration of 35 minutes in one charge (with current battery technology).

The ride is incredibly stable and quiet, in fact, it is four times quieter than a small helicopter, thanks to all rotors that acoustically operate within a narrow frequency range. These rotors are powered by 9 exchangeable lithium-ion batteries, which can be swapped out swiftly and securely at a Vol°Port after landing. The VoloCity reaches a maximum speed of 110 km/h (59 kn) and will fly at energy-efficient and comfortable passenger speed when taking to city skies. This new aircraft is designed to meet the highest safety standards according to the EASA SC-VTOL enhanced certification (10-9).

Volocopter is targeting the commercial use of VoloCity in various locations worldwide, with the intention to start flights in the next three years. The Volocopter air taxis services will provide safe, sustainable, and congestion-free inner-city travel for our customers. Due to the low-flight altitude and city maneuvering, training for the VoloCopter will be a one-of-a-kind experience that prepares all pilots for the future of Urban Air Mobility.
