Ryan NYP
The Ryan NYP, informally the Spirit of St. Louis, was an experiemental airplane built by Ryan Airlines in 1927.
It is notable for being the first aircraft to complete a solo, non-stop transatlantic flight — from Long Island, New York to Paris, France — on 1927-05-21, piloted by Charles Lindbergh and with a duration of 33 hours and 30 minutes.
Summary
“ | The NYP Spirit of St. Louis is a single-seat, single-engine airplane crafted by Ryan Airlines working as the Ryan Aeronautical Company. The custom-built, one-of-a-kind Spirit of St. Louis became one of the most famous aircraft in history after Charles Lindbergh piloted it solo across the Atlantic Ocean in May of 1927. The NYP, an initialism for "New York-Paris," is a heavily modified Ryan M-2, a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane used for mail transport. Funded by businessmen from St. Louis, the M-2 underwent a number of critical alterations for high-endurance flight that were carefully supervised by Charles Lindbergh. These included lengthening the fuselage by 2 ft (0.6 m), stretching the wingspan by 10 ft (3.0 m), adding fuel tanks, and moving the cockpit aft to accommodate for the changed center of gravity. The Spirit of St. Louis measures 27 ft 7 in (8.41 m) in length, has a wingspan of 46 ft 0 in (14.02 m), and features a traditional undercarriage. The airplane carries a total of 450 US gal (1,703 l) of fuel in tanks located in the wing and the fuselage, including between the cockpit and the engine bulkhead, necessitating using an onboard periscope for a forward view. The NYP is powered by a 9-cylinder Wright J-5C Whirlwind radial piston engine that produces up to 220 hp (164 kW). The powerplant turns a 2-blade, Duralumin propeller by the Standard Steel Propeller Company that allows pre-operation pitch adjustment. The NYP cruises between 100 and 110 mph (87 and 96 kn; 161 and 177 km/h), has a range of 4,100 mi (3,563 nmi; 6,598 km), and a service ceiling of 16,400 ft (4,999 m) above sea level. One of the most famous airplanes in history, the Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis was built to squeeze every possible mile out of its fuel load. From within its Spartan cockpit, aviators can recreate Lindbergh’s astonishing trans-Atlantic flight of 1927, or attempt their own, connecting distant points on the globe nonstop in the renowned machine. |
