The Pilatus PC-6 Porter, later turbocharged models similarly named the Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter, is a civil utility‎ and short takeoff and landing (STOL) airplane manufactured by Pilatus and Fairchild Aircraft.

Summary

The PC-6 Porter is a high-wing, single-engine STOL (short takeoff and landing) general purpose airplane created by Swiss manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft. First flown on May 4, 1959, the PC-6 enjoyed a remarkable uninterrupted production run that spanned six decades, the last one being delivered in 2019. Hailed as one of the most successful utility aircraft ever produced, the Porter has served a host of needs over the years, from civil, to scientific, to recreation, to military, including use by the CIA-owned Air America in Southeast Asia.

The PC-6 is crewed by one, and can hold up to ten passengers or 2,646 pounds of cargo. Fully loaded, it can fly into and out of some of the tightest, most rugged airstrips on the planet. The Porter features a strut-reinforced, straight main wing with a span of 52 ft 1 in (15.88 m), a conventional empennage, and a fixed tailwheel landing gear system. Its distinctly elongated nose shrouds a 550-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 turboprop engine that turns a 3-bladed constant-speed propeller. The PC-6 cruises at 115 kn (213 km/h), can fly as fast as 125 kn (232 km/h), and has a range of 391 nmi (724 km). It can take off in 640 ft (195 m), land within 430 ft (131 m), climb at 1,000 feet per minute, and has a service ceiling of 25,000 ft (7,620 m) above sea level.

Designed for operations out of some of the wildest, most remote locations on the globe, the Pilatus PC-6 Porter is a legend in the world of backcountry flying. From within its cockpit, skilled pilots can put the Porter down on landing zones that seem suitable exclusively for helicopters, then launch back into the heights to continue exploring.
