Messerschmitt Bf 109
The Messerschmitt Bf 109, commonly incorrectly referred to as the Me 109 by the Allies, was a fighter manufactured by Messerschmitt.
Summary
Bf 109 B-0
February 1937. It had the 720 hp Jumo 210Da engine and two 7.9 mm Rheinmetall-Borsig light machine guns. These units were very limited and mostly for testing and pre-production.
Bf 109 B-1
680 hp Junkers Jumo 210Da engine. In May 1937, II/JG-88 received the Bf 109. 300 units were produced by mid-July 1937.
Bf 109 C-1
Spring 1938. 730 hp Junkers Jumo 210Ga engine at 1000 m a.s.l. Armament of four 7.92 mm Rheinmetall-Borsig light machine guns; one in each wing and two on the engine cowling. Fifty-eight units were produced in early March 1938.
Bf 109 C-2
Same engine as the Bf 109C-1, plus the standard armament, and an MG-17 machine gun firing through the propeller.
Bf 109 D-1
Spring 1938. With a similar engine to the B, but with the armament of the C. Essentially, it served to combine the development of the previous models into a single variant.
Bf 109 E-1
Mid-1939. It was powered by the 1,175 hp DB 601A engine. It was armed with four 7.9 mm Rheinmetall-Borsig MG-17 light machine guns, two in the engine cowling and one in each wing. This new variant was the first to deliver the new DB 601 engine, due to an order to produce a new, more powerful model. Production began in August 1938, with a total of 543 units.
Bf 109 E-3
Late 1939. Similar to the E-1, but with two of the wing-mounted light machine guns replaced by 20mm Oerlikon MG-FF cannons. This new variant was designed to provide greater effectiveness against modern bombers of the time. Therefore, the RLM ordered the development and subsequent production of this variant, with a total of 1,250 units produced from February 1939.
Bf 109 E-4
An E-3 with improved armament of Oerlikon MG-FF/M cannons in each wing, offering a higher rate of fire. Also available in Jabo E-4/B and E-4/N configurations, powered by a 1,200 hp DB 601N engine. This new model was a result of the experience gained in the Battles of France and Britain. 550 units were produced from August 1939.
Bf 109 E-7
A "long-range" version of the E-4, capable of mounting an external 300-liter fuel tank. It had the same armament and payload configuration as the E-4. This variant addressed the needs encountered during various battles across Europe, where the problem of the Bf 109's limited range during combat missions was a recurring issue. 450 were produced starting in August 1940.
Bf 109 F
The F-0 was the culmination of all modifications made to the Bf 109 V21 through Bf 109 V24 prototypes. These modifications resulted in a significant improvement in maneuverability: a 360° turn at an altitude of 100 meters above sea level was reduced from 25 seconds to 18 seconds, and the initial climb rate was reduced from 1127 m/min to 1036 m/min. The engine used was the DB-601N, which featured flat-head pistons, increasing the compression ratio from 6.9 to 8.2. Consequently, it used 96-octane C3 gasoline, resulting in a takeoff power of 1200 hp. Armament consisted of one 20 mm MG FF/M cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 7.92 mm Rheinmetall-Borsig MG 17 light machine guns mounted on the engine cowling.
Bf 109 F-1
The Bf 109 F-1 is one of the first production versions of the Friedrich variant, which originated from the same place and with the same purpose as its sister version, the Me 109 F-2. More specifically, it was based on the flight results of the prototypes from the project to modernize the 109 Emil. Based on this, on the first months in 1940 the RLM signed the production order, although production did not begin until July 1940, with 208 units produced.
Bf 109 F-2
The Bf 109F-2 version of "Franz," as its pilots called it. The Bf 109 F-2 originated from the P.1034 modernization project, which included changes to the aircraft's design, improving its aerodynamics, engine, and armament. The development and production order were finalized based on the flight results of the V23 prototype with the standard Bf 109 F-2 configuration between March and April 1940. The F-2 received the 1,175 hp (1,159 hp, 864 kW) DB 601N engine driving a VDM 9-11207 propeller and replaced the MG FF cannon with a higher-velocity 15 mm MG 151 cannon. As the more powerful 20 mm Mauser MG 151/20 became available, several F-2s were equipped with it in combat. Between October 1940 and August 1941, AGO, Arado, Erla, Messerschmitt Regensburg and WNF (Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke) built about 1230 F-2s.
