The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is an American air superiority fighter and fighter-bomber manufactured by Lockheed.

Summary

The F-104G Starfighter is a supersonic, single-engine, single-place military aircraft by American aircraft producer Lockheed. The Starfighter was conceived by legendary aircraft designer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson based on feedback he received from American fighter pilots who flew combat sorties during the Korean War. The jet, which took its first flight on March 4, 1954, is small, lightweight, uncomplicated, and is extremely fast and has excellent high altitude performance — all characteristics the pilots told Johnson that they needed to prevail in the skies of the war. The Starfighter was the first aircraft to simultaneously hold both the world speed and world altitude record.

The F-104 was introduced on February 20, 1958 to the United States Air Force and was ultimately used by the militaries of a host of other countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, and Pakistan. The aircraft served a number of roles in combat, including air superiority, interception, light bombing, attack, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance gathering. The F-104G is the most widely produced variant of the Starfighter, with over 1,100 built. The RF-104G is the photo reconnaissance variant of the multi-role jet, and is fitted with three Maurer KS-67A 70mm still cameras mounted in a "trimetrogon" configuration that yield a full horizon-to-horizon profile of a transect of the planet's surface over which it flew.

The Starfighter measures 54 ft 8 in (16.66 m) in length, features a wing with a span of 21 ft 9 in (6.63 m), and a T-tail empennage. It is powered by a single General Electric J79 afterburning turbojet engine that produces up to 10,000 lbf (44 kN) of thrust in military power, and 15,600 lbf (69 kN) under full afterburner. The jet has a maximum combat range of 365 nmi (675.98 km), a maximum speed of 1,327 kn (2,457.60 km/h) (Mach 2), climbs at an incredible 48,000 ft (14,630 m) per minute, and has a service ceiling of 50,000 ft (15,240 m) above sea level.

Its dagger-like appearance evocative of raw performance, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter delivers on its looks, and then some. From its cockpit, aviators can fly this speed machine on a chain of intricate low-level maneuvers, and then blast to heights where the curvature of the earth comes into view.
