Summary

The G-21A Goose is a high-wing, twin-engine, amphibious aircraft manufactured by American aviation producer Grumman. The Goose took its maiden flight on May 29, 1937 and proved to be an important success for the then-young company. Initially intended for the business and leisure market, the Goose was also adopted for military use. Grumman produced a total of 345 of the aircraft between 1937 and 1945.

The idea for the Goose emerged when a group of Manhattan businessmen sought an "air yacht" to transport them between their city offices and their homes on Long Island. It needed to be able to operate from land or water, be fast and efficient, and be spacious and comfortable. Leroy Grumman accepted the challenge and assembled a team to develop the “G-21 amphibian air yacht.”

What emerged at Grumman’s Bethpage, New York headquarters was a classic in looks, performance, and overall versatility. The all-metal design features a high-mounted cantilever wing, a cruciform empennage, and a hull with retractable main landing gear, allowing it to operate as a taildragger on land. The wing supports two radial engines and has wing floats for stability while on water. The customers for whom the Goose was initially designed were thrilled, and due to its speed, range, power, ability to operate easily on land and water, and capaciousness, other businessmen purchased the aircraft, as did a number of airlines. The Goose’s durability, range, and power made it a choice for eleven militaries throughout the world. The seventh offering from the company, which at the time was less than a decade old, it was its greatest success for Grumman to date.

Crewed by one or two, the Goose can hold up to eight, including pilot(s). It measures 38 feet, 3 inches in length, has a wingspan of 49 ft 0 in (14.94 m), and stands 12 ft 2 in (3.71 m) (while on land). It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN6-2035 9-cylinder radial piston engines that each produce up to 450 hp (336 kW) and turn 2-blade, variable-pitch propellers. The G-21A has a range of 800 mi (700 nmi; 1,300 km), climbs at 1,500 ft (457 m) per minute, and has a service ceiling of 24,000 ft (7,315 m) above sea level. It cruises at a brisk 146 mph (127 kn; 235 km/h) and has a top speed of 195 mph (169 kn; 314 km/h).

The Grumman G-21A Goose is one of the aviation world’s most capable aircraft. Powerful, responsive, rugged, and able to operate from water and all types of terrestrial facilities, from short dirt strips to modern international airports, the Goose is an aviator’s favorite.
