The Curtiss JN, nicknamed the "Jenny", was a series of biplane military trainer aircraft for the United States Army built by Curtiss in beginning in 1915.

Summary

The JN-4 Jenny is a single-engine, two-seat, open-cockpit biplane produced by Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company of the United States. The distinctive-looking JN-4 is one of the most influential, recognizable, and famous aircraft in the history of aviation.

The JN-4 (Jenny is phonetic derivation of the letters JN) traces its lineage to the Model J and Model N, two biplanes evaluated by the U.S. Army in 1914 for combat use. Curtiss developed the JN-2 from the Model J and the Model N, then created the JN-3, and finally, refined the JN-3 into the JN-4. The JN-4 took its first flight in the summer of 1916.

The JN-4 was used primarily as a military trainer, with more than 90% of American combat pilots learning to fly in its cockpit during the First World War. It remained in military service until 1927, but by then many of the aircraft had been introduced into the civilian market through post-war surplus and direct sales from Curtiss (at the brand new price of $4,000).

Curtiss marketed the aircraft for a variety of uses to the public, including mapping, transport, patrol, and medical use. Jennys were used for the first United States Airmail routes and the JN-4 quickly became the aircraft of choice for barnstormers who performed throughout the United States, helping to cement the allure of flight forever into the minds of people throughout the world.

The JN-4 is constructed with wooden framing and fabric covering. It features tandem seating, a traditional tail unit, and a standard undercarriage. The JN-4 measures 27 ft 4 in (8.33 m) in length, stands 9 ft 11 in (3.02 m) in height, and has a wingspan of 43 ft 7 in (13.28 m). The Jenny is powered by a Curtiss OX-5 V-8 piston engine that delivers up to 90 hp (67 kW) and turns a fixed-pitch, 2-blade wood propeller. The biplane cruises at 60 mph (52 kn; 97 km/h), has a top speed of 75 mph (65 kn; 121 km/h), a service ceiling of 6,500 ft (1,981 m) above sea level, and a range of 155 mi (135 nmi; 249 km).

The beautiful Curtiss JN-4 Jenny helped aviators blaze developmental trails in the early days of flight due to its resilient and forgiving design. It remains one of the best aircraft in which to learn to fly, and to enjoy sights while coasting through the heights.
