The Cessna 337 Skymaster, originally named the Cessna 337 Super Skymaster, is civil utility airplane originally manufactured by Cessna Aircraft Company and later by Reims Aviation. It is the more popular version of the slightly smaller and slower Cessna 336 Skymaster with the addition of a retractable landing gear. The 337 was also employed as a military observation airplane by the United States Air Force under the Cessna O-2 Skymaster designator.
The aircraft is noteworthy as being one of the few twin-engine civil aircraft built in a push-pull configuration. This type of design greatly reduces, but does not completely eliminate, left-turning tendencies due to P-factor (asymmetric propeller loading). As a result of this configuration, the Cessna 337 was sometimes colloquially referred to as the "Suck and Blow".
“ | The 337 Skymaster is a twin-engine, high-wing, six-place utility aircraft produced by American aviation company Cessna. The Skymaster has seen a wide variety of uses, including civil, scientific, forestry, and military, serving in dozens of countries throughout the globe. The Skymaster has a distinct form characterized most notably by its push-pull dual engine configuration and twin booms extending aft of its main fuselage compartment. The first Skymaster took its maiden flight on February 28, 1961, and the 337 was introduced in February of 1965. The 337's main wing, which has a span of 38 feet, 9 inches, is mounted atop the rear aspect of the aircraft's passenger compartment and has two tail booms connected to its underside. A vertical stabilizer extends from the rearward aspect of each of the booms, and a horizontal stabilizer connects the two. The Skymaster is powered by two Continental IO-360-C six-cylinder piston engines that each produce up to 210 horsepower and turn 2-blade, fully-feathering, constant-speed propellers. The tractor powerplant is mounted to the nose of the aircraft, and the pusher is mounted on the rear of the passenger compartment between the two tail booms. The Skymaster cruises at 144 miles per hour, has a top speed of 200 mph, and climbs at 1,200 feet per minute. It has a range of 965 miles and a service ceiling of 19,500 feet above sea level. Maximum performance and broad utility define the Cessna 337 Skymaster. With two powerful engines, pilots can fly into an take off from a wide range of airfields, even those less than 2,000 feet in length. In the air, the Skymaster allows aviators to explore and push their abilities in all environments, from cruising along a coastline, to navigating high, glaciated mountain passes. |
