The Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama is a single-engine, light utility helicopter designed for hot weather and high altitude performance required by the Nepalese Army Air Service and Indian Air Force which entered operational service in July 1971.
The helicopter was initially built by Sud Aviation and Aérospatiale, though many were also built under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India as the HAL Cheetah, HAL Lancer, and HAL Cheetal. Similarly, Helibras produced licensed helicopters in Brazil as the Helibras HB-315B Gavião.
The aircraft was primarily designed as a hybrid of the Aérospatiale Alouette II and Aérospatiale Alouette III, utilizing the lighter airframe of the former while the powerplant and many components were incorporated from the latter. This unique combination of low weight and high power grant it exceptional performance in high-altitude mountainous operations.
