North American T-6 Texan
The North American T-6 Texan is an American military trainer manufactured by North American Aviation beginning in 1935. It is one of, if not the, least expensive United States warbirds that can be privately owned and operated.
Summary
| “ | The T-6 Texan is a two-seat, single-engine, propeller-driven military aircraft that was produced by North American Aviation and saw its most notable use during the Second World War. Also designated the "SNJ" and the "Harvard", its lineage began with the North American NA-16, which took its maiden flight on April 1, 1935 and was ultimately developed into the T-6. Nicknamed the "Pilot Maker", the aircraft was used primarily as an advanced trainer, with some limited time as a light combat and test platform aircraft. A total of 15,495 Texans were produced, with the militaries of more than 60 countries flying them from the late 1930s through the 1990s. While not the most famous airplane of World War II, it was one of the most important of that conflict, as most all allied pilots, of all aircraft types, trained and learned invaluable flying skills in the Texan. A taildragger, the T-6 has retractable main landing gear, an enclosed tandem cockpit, and a low wing with a span of 42 ft 0 in (12.80 m). The aircraft is renowned for being "overbuilt," meaning rugged and able to endure rigorous use, decade after decade. It is also known as being somewhat challenging to operate, especially on the ground, which was intentional, to ensure proper piloting skills prior to military aviators entering actual combat. The T-6 is powered by a 9-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 Wasp radial engine that produces 600 hp (447 kW) and drives a variable pitch, two-blade propeller. The Texan cruises at 126 kn (233 km/h), has a top speed of 181 kn (335 km/h), and a service ceiling of 24,000 feet above sea level. Powerful, loud, and imposing, the North American T-6 Texan is a favorite among warbird pilots, for its presence as well as its performance. A true pilot's airplane, the sturdy Texan does exactly what it's told to do, over and over, through most all conditions, from straight and level flight, to snap rolls. |
