The F-16A Fighting Falcon (known as the 'viper' to its pilots) is a lightweight single-engine multi-role fighter. It was designed by General Dynamics to compete in the Lightweight Fighter program fly-off in the early 1970s. It competed and won against Northrop's YF-17 Cobra, which would eventually be adapted into the F/A-18 for the US Navy. The F-16 was the first fly-by wire aircraft fielded by the US armed forces, which was necessitated by its intentionally low-negative static stability for increased maneuverability. The airframe's versatility has led to export success and continuous service for over 40 years.
