Its last carrier launch was from the HMS Ark Royal on 2010-11-24 with its last flight occuring on 2010-12-15. In November of 2011, 72 of the 143 built were sold to the United States Marine Corps to be cannibalized for spare parts in order to sustain its McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II fleet.

The Harrier GR.7/GR.9 was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and, between 2006 and 2010, the Royal Navy (RN). The Harrier GR.7/GR.9 and other models of the Harrier family have been called "Jump Jets". The Harrier GR.7/GR.9 was also capable of being operated from the Invincible class aircraft carriers. The Harrier II flew combat missions in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In December 2010, budgetary pressures led to the early retirement of all Harriers from service.
